What is club foot?

Club foot describes foot abnormalities that are usually present since birth (congenital) in which the child's foot is shaped or bent toward the position. In club feet, the tissues connecting the muscles to the tendons are shorter than normal. Club foot is a fairly common birth defect and is a congenital orthopedic anomaly, which can be brought back to the previous condition through treatment or operative treatment.

Club foot may be normal or severe. Approximately half of the children with club foot problems have this on both feet. If your child has a club foot, it will be difficult to walk normally, so doctors usually recommend treating it soon after birth. Doctors are usually able to successfully treat club foot without surgery, although sometimes children require a subsequent surgery.
