India (128)

Can we in our communities contribute to have dog trainers train the Indian street dogs to bark a lot at the vehicles polluting heavily (above a limit)? Would that help to make the drivers realize that they're not only harming others but also themselves? Can we share this with dog trainers and that try to do this if any dog trainers are professionally interested? It's highly unfortunate that Indian street dogs are living in such pathetic conditions and that they can't even do anything like humans for the same. Best! Shakti

Today at a gym having high quality international equipment, there was a bottle on a dumbbell chair. So I asked a person who works at the gym for help regarding the bottle that who's is it because I wanted to use that chair. The person responded that how can he know and that he said that I can move it. I told him that I can't and that's why I'm asking the gym on which he said that what can he do about it which was shocking since it seems that he works in sales. By then some floor cleaner was passing by there on which he called the cleaner and said that the cleaner would help me. By then some member picked up the bottle.

Then when I went to use the dumbbell chair, I found that the seat was moving left and right quite a lot and that it was highly unstable. I told a trainer about this. When I was leaving the gym, I told some other trainers including senior trainers about this that this can be lethal on which a senior trainer said that this cannot be lethal. I then explained that someone who doesn't know well about working out if sits on it and does shoulder press with dumbbell and that if the person loses a bit of control then that  person can even get paralyzed and then I again said that this is lethal on which the senior trainer didn't say that it's not lethal. I told them that they should've removed this chair right away at least after I brought it to notice on which I heard comments like it would take few rupees to buy a screw to fix it which might even be right, however, the fix being very simple doesn't mean the problem isn't very serious. They removed the chair from the workout floor after that.

I don't think that these people at the gym mean any harm to anyone, however, how much concerned are they for their clients? The punching bag is damaged on which I asked why. I was told that the clients don't use it properly and that it was getting lose from the bottom and then it broke because the clients didn't tighten it when it was lose. I said that I was noticing the bag to be lose for several days. Shouldn't the gym be maintaining it on which I was told by a senior trainer that whoever he trains on the punching bag, he tells them on how to properly use it. I told him that I don't think that all clients have been trained by him on it and so how can he expect that the clients would ensure that it's tight. Moreover, it had been getting lose for days and I thought that the gym would do something about it because I didn't know what to do about it. I wasn't told by this or any other trainer that keep tightening the bag to its base. Moreover, wouldn't this be like a regular task to do by the gym for maintaining its equipment?

During the workout, another trainer came and told me to re-rack the weights. I told him that I've spoken to the owner about this issue that there are members willing to contribute to hire someone who can wipe clean and re-rack the equipment and also wipe clean the benches on a very frequent basis on which the owner had said that my feedback has been received and that some days later the owner had even asked me later if anyone asked me again for it. I thought that this issue was addressed. Getting quality to high quality things from around the world is great, however, then such experiences are highly unfortunate.

Aisi Indianness kitni? How much is such Indianness? How to become like the best in our world? Kya Indian in general sochta hai ki uski soch kaisi hai? Does Indian in general think that how is that person's thinking? This is happening at a very expensive gym by Indian standards. I took a friend to the gym yesterday who runs a shop to show him if he might be interested on which he said it's very expensive.

Hi All,

In this blog post, I'll share in the comments below about Physiotherapy Theory, Techniques and Tools.

You can also browse Physical Therapy India www.facebook.com/PhysicalTherapyIndia

Physical therapists formed their first professional association in 1921, called the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association. Led by President Mary McMillan, an executive committee of elected officers governed the Association, which included 274 charter members. By the end of the 1930s, the Association changed its name to the American Physiotherapy Association. Men were admitted, and membership grew to just under 1,000.

With the advent of World War II and a nationwide polio epidemic during the 1940s and 1950s, physical therapists were in greater demand than ever before. The Association's membership swelled to 8,000, and the number of physical therapy education programs across the US increased from 16 to 39.

By the late 1940s, the Association had changed its name to the American Physical Therapy Association, hired a full-time staff, and opened its first office in New York City.

From http://www.jagranjosh.com/current-affairs/indoswiss-bilateral-meeting-concluded-at-geneva-on-sidelines-of-world-health-assembly-1369117412-1

A bilateral meeting between Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, India, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Minister of Health Switzerland, Alain Berset, was concluded on 20 May 2013 at Geneva. The meeting was held on the sidelines of World Health Assembly at Geneva. The aim of the meeting was to give further impetus to cooperation in the field of healthcare.

In the meeting, it was decided that an MoU between the two countries will be inked soon for broadening the scope of bilateral ties. The major areas of cooperation of that MoU will be:

• Non-Communicable Diseases including controlling the associated risk factors of tobacco use, harmful alcohol use, unhealthy diet, etc.

• Communicable Diseases and Anti- Microbial resistance
• Universal Health Coverage
• Maternal & Child health
• Sexual & Reproductive Health
• Health & Medical Research
• Therapeutic Products
• Electronic Medical Records
• Global Health Governance

In the meeting, it was exuded that Switzerland will extend full support to India on global platforms in order to carry forward the pursuits of providing high quality generic medicines at affordable prices.

From http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ani/indo-swiss-bilateral-meet-held-at-geneva-113052100284_1.html

Speaking on the occasion, Azad said that friendship between India and Switzerland goes as back as Independence of India, strongly rooted as it is in shared values of multi-culturalism, democracy and rule of law.

Recalling the historic ties between the two countries, Azad said that a treaty of friendship between India and Switzerland was signed at New Delhi as early as 1948, soon after India's independence.

Emphasizing the special nature of relationship between the two countries, Azad said that many high level visits have been exchanged in the recent past and that many bilateral institutional arrangements like Indo-Swiss Joint Commission, Swiss- India Chamber of Commerce, Indo-Swiss Joint Committee on Science and technology, etc. exist to further cement our strong relations.

Azad noted that in the continuum of strong Indo-Swiss bilateral cooperation, an MOU between the two countries will be inked soon to further broaden the scope of bilateral ties.

"Considerable progress has been made in this regard and an MOU in the field of health is being signed to promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries", Azad said.

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Sonia Bajaj to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

After delivering 2 boys as any other woman tried to cut down on that extra fat on my body. Tried all kinds of yo yo diets, paid a good amount of money to the so called dieticians. Kept on going through the same circle of loosing few kilos on scale, and as soon as quitted the diet, went back to square one.

Finally planned to give up all diets, started exercising and eating a balanced diet, which could be followed life long. I saw such awesome changes in my body, not only in terms of fat loss, but also in terms of strength, stamina, agility, power.

I became a happier soul, more confident. So decided that if can share my experience with all those men and women who are struggling for years to lose fat in a right way, so that it never comes back, would be a great achievement for me.

Hence totally dedicated myself to promoting health and fitness.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

I've done my group certification with Reebok.

I've done my Personal Training certification with AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EXERCISE.

I'm certified in Pilates, Kickboxing, and Prenatal and Postnatal workouts.

I've done workshops in TRX AND BOSU workouts.

I'm a certified nutritionist by BFY MUMBAI.

People ask me WHERE ARE THE MACHINES IN YOUR GYM.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

I see a lot of excellent and certified fitness coaches here in India. But what I have realized is that what we need as per the times is Fitness motivators.

We have to train the brain before training any other muscle group. People give it up very fast, everyone is looking for a short cut.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

My piece of advice to my clients and every one reading this is that take care of your body.

Just give 30 minutes 5 days a week to yourself.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOURSELF, FAT LOSS WILL BE THE ICING ON THE CAKE.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

Few year from now I see people following what I try to enforce today;

FAT LOSS IS NOT A ONE DAY, ONE MONTH OR ONE YEAR PROJECT,

It's a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.

Water Pollution - Health Fitness India

In this blog, I'll be sharing posts related to water pollution in India. I'll be sharing issues and also on basic to advanced solutions for reducing and stopping it. I welcome you to comment with anything of value. I wish that all of us realize that water pollution harms us, our family and friends, and our society and world at large. What's the point of earning money that will mostly go to curing diseases and that one wouldn't even be well enough to enjoy any of the remaining money? I wish that we can do much better than how things are in India and that if you wonder that why we Indians haven't been able to have things much better then I also wonder about our elders for the same, however, I also think that just by saying that they were/are useless or not good enough wouldn't help. We've to make the issue of water pollution a critical issue in our lives since water is critical for our lives without which we can't even live and that if we're drinking polluted water then seriously how well are we living? Can we think of the Indian street dogs who drink just whatever that they get? We're humans who're capable in general and that we can at least significantly reduce the issue of water pollution by all of us working together intelligently, smartly, and with common sense.

Why do the top fitness trainers in India try to go abroad for work?

A top fitness trainer of a top international gym in India shared with me that he's going abroad after having done great here and that the level abroad is much ahead of here. Another fitness trainer shared that he lost opportunities because of how the officials here treated him when he was doing well in international competitions.

Before I start sharing about why the top trainers in India try to go abroad for work, I thank God and my web design, graphic design, content writing and online marketing client Life Coach Ms. Jasmin Waldmann who's in India (Gurgaon, Delhi and other cities) from Germany adding value to the health and fitness of people including to trainers in India.

Please get value from and please share about Life Coach Ms. Jasmin Waldmann. I've created her site www.jasminwaldmann.com. She just messaged me at 4:26pm (15 Jan' 15) "hi. please call me asap. thanks a lot" and today I've been updating this and other pages on my Health Fitness India Network site with my Health Fitness India Directory site and my Google+ and Facebook links. I'm thankful to the best for enabling so much in our world.

You can see below my LinkedIn article in which I share that God is Amazing and mention 6:24pm and this article is about top fitness trainers in India going abroad and a wonderful international trainer coming to India. Moreover, dad just gave me the newspaper to see the iPhone 5c upgrade offer and my aunt in Switzerland had just called mom about she gifting me a mobile by buying it online. Dad's mobile number has 426 in it! I wish my efforts would also help more and more people in India to learn about health, fitness, beauty, fashion, career, security and more. This is my LinkedIn article www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140703191526-517504-4th-of-july-god-is-amazing

A boy was cycling fast and passed me by while I was walking. It made me think that he would be breathing in air that much more and deeply. Then I thought if he would be taking in harmful to very harmful chemicals in air due to pollution that much more and deeply. This made me think about the top trainers in India that do they take in harmful to very harmful chemicals in air that much more and deeply. You might get value from my LinkedIn article "On India's Republic Day, do you wonder?" www.linkedin.com/pulse/indias-republic-day-do-you-wonder-shakti-saran

A day after writing above about my aunt calling:

-----

Thank You God for my uncle and aunt who're moving to India after a decade in Switzerland!

They give me much. Yesterday, I had wished them that they would do great!

Today I saw the 10 year graph for Swiss Franc to INR (link below)

19 Jan 2005 00:00 UTC - 16 Jan 2015 09:32 UTC
CHF/INR close:71.09358 low:32.56447 high:75.19262

Difference is of 42.62815 between 10 year low and high.

Yesterday, I had written related to them that God is Amazing and 426.

Kitne Indians jab apna sadna realize kare to bahar jaane ki sochne lage ki apne human potential ko to maximize karun agar kahin aur bhi par apni duniya mein to sahi?

How many Indians when they start realizing that they're rotting that they think about going even if somewhere else in our world to maximize their human potential?

What an advantage! An RJ said this while talking about Nicole Kidman that she has both Australian and US citizenship. This reminded me of a friend who told me that his roommate went to Australia and now has a citizenship there and that he also wants to go abroad. His roommate is doing very well and is now in India getting married.

I shared with him that how many people in Bangalore having several MNCs would be listening to this and would value this like him. He has shared about wanting to go abroad since several years, however, he doesn't make even the basic efforts properly which is to give IELTS like for Canada.

I also told him about a recent news that people in Bangalore on average breathe polluted air as if they had smoked six cigarettes a day and people in Delhi on average breathe polluted air as is if they had smoked twenty cigarettes.

Do you wonder how many graduates from IITs and also those not from IITs try to go abroad sooner or later? Is that also why things are like this because those who're highly aware and care much generally go abroad or else how could the conditions be like this in general?

I also shared with my friend that what would his child in future say about the quality of mother's milk given the harmful chemicals in air, water, food, land and products going into the girls who'll later become mothers? Is this also why even the fitness trainers who I've known and some of them who're seemingly top quality try to go abroad?

I think he can do well abroad and then can also get great reception in India as an NRI like his friend gets according to him. He has around nine years of experience including in TCS about which there was news that the company is letting go of people above eight or so years of experience and so he wants to join another company because of the atmosphere of uncertainty there. I wish him best!

Over the years, some different fitness trainers in India having top certifications including the international ones and having worked at top gyms in India and having several personal training clients in India have shared with me about trying to go abroad for work.

I'll keep sharing in this blog post from experiences with trainers in India trying to go abroad.

18th October 2015: Why Indians want to work abroad? Some different fashion designers working for reputed Indian brands have shared with me how they're not paid or their pay is delayed by months. Is that also why Indians try to study at fashion design colleges abroad so that they might work abroad after that?

Later they can also come to India and even do work at high levels. A major e-commerce company in India has hired their head of products who went abroad and then came to India for this job. I've created the Fashion Designers India https://www.fashiondesignersindia.com site. You can ask me for details.

Also, what about fitness trainers working in India? I've heard from several fitness trainers in India that they're not doing well. Are you a trainer and getting fooled by any fitness certification businesses?

Do you wonder what quality milk and related products you, your mother, child and family in general will have during the great time of Diwali and have been throughout the year? Do you ever check? How to easily check? Can we take things to somewhere nearby and get them checked well? What quality levels do you see of the expensive things got from abroad?

31st October 2014: Some high-quality Indian trainer said why people in India have to bring trainers from abroad to India. Aren't the trainers in India capable enough.

I responded that build valuable relations with (good to great) trainers abroad to bring even higher value to people in India.

The same trainer said that why are several of his experiences negative with people in India.

I responded that harmful chemicals in air, water, food and land could be rotting the people here. I wish our efforts would help to improve things.

29th May 2014: Yesterday someone visited and said ki aap to jaante hai ki hindustan ke log kaise hote hai related to products with harmful chemicals being sold in India.

I had met him for the first time. He had come to deliver some product of a top international brand. He had shared on a variety of products sold in India related to harmful chemicals.

I wondered that what were his experiences that he said such a thing and that how many others would also say such a thing. Is this also because of the mother's milk that Indians are drinking that Indian people think and say about Indian people like this?

Indian suar, kutte ya sher ke bare mein kaha hota to samajh mein aata ki shayad woh aise hai kyunki woh janwar hai, lekin insaan ke bare mein bhi aisa general mein kaha. I'm sure there would be better people also, however, still how many Indian people would be getting milk of mother's tested since harmful chemicals in air, water, food and land would be harming that milk and then the Indian people since they're babies.

Suaron ke group mein to sher jaisa hona bhi na samajh mein aaye lekin insaan to duniya ke best se easily seekh sakta hai aur apne aap se bhi seekh sakta hai. Mere kitne relatives aur jaan pehchan ke hain jo ki India mein very senior to top reach karne ke baad abroad jaa rahe hain. I wish ki woh aur Indian logo ko bhi sikhate honge ki best kaise hai aur best kaise bane.

Next generations mein kitne Indians sochenge ki maa ka doodh hi achcha hota to kitna achcha hota. Yeh to insaan hi soch sakta hai, na hi suar aur na hi sher. I wish us best.

Hence also I think that the top Indian fitness professionals are getting international certifications and also trying to work abroad because more people in India might value it.

25th May 2014: When girls in India start drinking mother's milk then do they start becoming inferior from their initial human potential and does that make them suffer even more in life due to harmed mind and body?

21st May 2014: Fitness trainers who work at places without uniform air cooling risk their health. Do you realize what can happen to the health by working out and body getting hot and then quickly going to a much cooler area and this happening several times in a day? Sudden change from hot to cold can harm health. "Eye infections, respiratory infections and muscular spasms are caused by this change in temperature," Dr Shah said.

19th May 2014: I'll share the details later. First, I'll share in brief. I asked a trainer that why doesn't his employer who has the contract to manage the gym gives him some gym t-shirts so that he can be a lot more comfortable doing his workout and work. This trainer seems to sweat much when he works out and his non-gym t-shirts seem to make it much worse for him. This can be an issue at the lower-end gyms in India where there's no standard apparel provided by the gym for the trainers and the trainers might not know well enough about the gym t-shirts to buy themselves.

There can also be issues faced by the trainers at the higher-end gyms which can eventually make the top trainers want to go abroad unless they start their own business in India and also do well. Of course, there would be good gyms here too, however, how many of them keep losing their top trainers who generate the highest revenues for the gym? A gym or fitness center will have to do increasing well to retain their top employees. If you require professional assistance in this regard then you can also ask me.

I've heard great things about experiences abroad from the top certified and experienced trainers in India who've traveled to or even worked abroad. I'm not saying that a fitness trainer can't have great experience in India, however, how many of the top fitness trainers in India working as employees think that they're having the best experience that there can be for them. Also, is it because the employers of fitness professionals in India just can't do enough to retain them or don't want do what's required for any number of reasons?

Today I wore my www.healthfitnessindia.com site embroidered cap to the gym. The trainer who I mentioned above said that the people abroad have such good bodies on which I responded that if his conditions like air, water and food were as great then he would also be much better by doing the same amount of workout which he does now. Moreover, he'll be able to do even more in the same amount of time when the environment would be much better. He also tried to share with me something about front dumbbell raise shoulder exercise which I thought was more of textbook knowledge than the experience of getting a more diverse workout while keeping the workout safe. Although, I'm thankful to him to share with me his thoughts which I think he did for the first time ever about my workout.

I think that almost every trainer who has been at this gym has asked me that from where to buy sports shoes, track pants, and gym t-shirts and he also asked today. He also mentioned about my cap which says my site. Today I wore it for the first time and got it recently embroidered with my site. I told him that there's a large building next to Mandi House metro station where he can get such items at reasonable prices. I thought that it wouldn't make sense to share shops that sell such items for much higher prices. I also said that I'm trying to start custom printing of t-shirts and if it happens then his employer can buy from me gym t-shirts branded with company or gym name or anything else.

Also, if you know from where people can buy fitness apparel at lower prices then share with me and I'll share it here.

If you are a fitness trainer, nutritionist, dietitian, martial art instructor, aerobics instructor, dance teacher, yoga teacher, Kettlebell trainer, CrossFit trainer, TRX trainer, BOSU trainer, ViPR trainer, gym, fitness center, a shop selling fitness t-shirts, track pants, shoes, protein supplements or anything else related to health and fitness or doing anything related to health and fitness then also register free in the Health and Fitness India Directory on www.healthfitnessindia.in

All of these lead to serious health implications, primarily causing damage to healthy tissue. "Long term exposure to cadmium causes fragile bones and decreased bone strength whereas mercury causes damage to stomach and intestines," said Khandare.

28 July 2015: Now, states in India show contamination in water & milk

In water, Chandigarh showed 100 per cent adulteration, Jharkhand 75 per cent, Andhra Pradesh 70 per cent, Karnataka 66 per cent and Tamil Nadu 58 per cent out of the samples collected for testing from each state or union territory.

Many states, which had showed considerable levels of adulteration in bottled water in the previous financial year, have not given their data for this year. Gujarat at 40 per cent, Haryana 30 per cent and Uttar Pradesh at 28 per cent contamination last year, are among the states with no data for 2014-15, as per Parliament reply given on July 24.

In milk too, there are many absentees in 2014-15 including Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, with these states offering no data. Himachal Pradesh showed 92 per cent of its milk samples being contaminated, while others with high level of adulteration were Jharkhand at 45 per cent, Chhattisgarh at 38 per cent, Jammu & Kashmir at 32 per cent and Madhya Pradesh at 28 per cent.

18th October 2014: Beware of spurious sweets and milk products during festive (Diwali) season

Some of the adulterants that are used in milk are water, chalk, urea, caustic soda and skimmed milk, while Khoya is adulterated with paper, refined oil and skimmed milk powder. Similarly, potato and Vanaspati have been found to contaminate Ghee, while the silver topping that is found on top of most mithais is often aluminium. Similarly, the Saffron thread that decorates mithai is often just dried and coloured corn hair. Combine all this together and you have the recipe for one big, bad stomach ache, if not worse!

So, now that you know why you ought to be careful about where you buy you sweets from and what to watch out for, we come to the next question – how do you know if the goods are spurious or not ! There are several ways methods you can employ to check whether the sweets you have bought are adulterated.

http://cityairnews.com/content/beware-spurious-sweets-and-milk-products-during-festive-season

Dr Virendra Yadav, Senior Medical Officer, BK Hospital said, “With the consumption of these adulterated sweets and chocolates, many diseases can occur. Chances of severe stomach infection and food poisoning can happen. Colours are added to the sweets which contain carbon and heavy metal that causes asthama and allergies. If one eats these adulterated sweets for long then later it may develop into cancer.”

26th September 2014: INDIA MILK ADULTERATION NEWS:

"...adulterating milk of various local as well as national brands"

Good the person was caught but what would such people generally do when they're back in society?

I also wonder the bad to very bad things that happened to people who consumed such milk and probably are consuming such milk or their made products.

Does a song like this ever play in your head that chote mote suar teri muththi mein kya hai if and when you're thinking that how unsure you're about the food quality around you.

It's great that we're humans and that the best people in our world have already done so much research and development for us to use and make things increasingly better for us.

The result? A better egg, in terms of health."

Read this somewhere and wondered how many Indians feel like having been brought up to live as best or even average humans? Of course, Indian street pigs, forest tigers and other animals would live how they are, however, we're humans.

Maa suarni to most likely uska bachcha jeeye poorly lekin hum to insaan hai. Can you please share more about eggs if you know?

19th August 2014: Dairy owners use hair bleach chemical to prolong life of milk

Officials have discovered that to prolong life of milk and milk products, many dairy owners had been using a cocktail of chemicals whose consumption can damage kidney and liver.

Food and drug officials detected Hydrogen peroxide (a common paper and hair bleaching agent), potassium hydroxide (used in soap preparation) and hypo (a bleaching agent) in milk recently.

This is the first time when the department noticed use of these chemicals whose short term consumption can cause gastroenteritis but damage liver and kidneys if ingested for a longer period.

Of these, hydrogen peroxide in particular is almost impossible to detect in laboratory tests, leading the officials to suspect the dairies could have been using these in plenty.

Usually, food security officer said, dairy owners mixed argemone oil, a poisonous substance, and starch in milk during preparations of products like paneer and mawa.

In fact, food security officer, it was the presence of a tin containing huge quantity of hydrogen peroxide at a dairy which alerted them about the misuse of these chemicals.

11th June 2014: Identifying artificially ripened mango

10824439480?profile=original

* Put mango in a container with water

* If it sinks to the bottom, it has been ripened naturally

* If it floats, it has matured with the help of calcium carbide

* Chemically matured mangoes also have distorted wrinkles on the skin

* They also taste different and have a pungent odour

“The Prevention of Food Adulteration act (1955) prohibits usage of such chemicals on food articles.

It has serious effects on health and can even cause cancer. It contains traces of arsenic, phosphorous and on reaction with water, produces acetylene gas.

It is severely irritating to eyes and direct contact may even lead to blindness. On contact with skin, it causes severe irritation, and rashes with burns.

On ingestion, it causes nausea, vomiting, headache, and burns in the gastrointestinal tract.

On inhalation, it leads to coughing, irritation of the throat, irregular breathing, shortness of breath and even pulmonary oedema.

It is neurotoxic and causes headache, dizziness, sleepiness, loss of memory, cerebral oedema, mental confusion and even seizures."

25th May 2014: Indian Cows Are Producing Toxic Milk Because They Are Grazing On Garbage When they return to their dairies their milk is adulterated with paint, detergents, caustic soda, urea and shampoo, the court heard.

11th May 2014: According to traders, almost 70% of the coconut oil sold through unbranded retail network is impure

Unfortunately, scientific detection of adulteration is very difficult as normal lab testing is ineffective in the case of coconut oil. Adulterated oil having coconut oil to the tune of 30 per cent exhibits the same quality and aroma as that of pure coconut oil.

7th May 2014: How much of this is also coming into India: Carrot, bean, tomato, lettuce, capsicum, banana, apple, pineapple and mango were contaminated with highly toxic pesticides. And the presence of banned pesticide Aldrin was found in milk, the test found.

http://www.thedailystar.net/frontpage/govt-found-not-serious-22238

Please also learn and think about what's coming in from our world. It's wonderful to get high-tech and advanced scientific solutions from our world, however, it's not to get such harmful things. It's nice that people there are also active about reducing this severely harmful issue.

29th April 2014: How can one distinguish between artificially ripened mangoes and organically grown ones? The following link shares about color, taste, texture and color of pulp and juice as factors.

http://www.thehealthsite.com/diseases-conditions/how-to-identify-artificially-ripened-mangoes/

What are the ill-effects of artificially ripened mangoes?

Dr Shah says, ‘Chemicals and pesticides cause a variety of diseases, some of the ill effects, they are known hormone disruptors leading to an increase in the number of hormonal diseases today like hypothyroid, polycstic ovaries, diabetes etc. Apart from that, they have been known to lead to Parkinson’s disease, cancer, and worst of all are passed on from mother to child via breast milk.

Is it possible to get rid of the chemicals by washing them properly or eating them without the outer skin?

‘Perhaps a small part but not a large enough amount of it. Wash the fruits well but you will still feel the burning sensation and carry all the ill effects,’ says Dr Shah.

21st April 2014: Jiski maa Indian woh in general kaisa khana khila rahi hogi aur usse log kaise ban rahe honge? With such low punishment for such a serious crime, how many people might keep doing this and causing us harm?  It's great that these people were caught due to great work of others, however, how many more would be doing this and which would also depend on how Indian mothers in general are making their children that we've people doing such things and other people not able to mostly stop this and that our condition has worsened so much. I wish us best.

In India, use of calcium carbide is strictly banned as per PoFA (Prevention of Food Adultration) Act [Section 44AA], because it contain the traces of arsenic and phosphorus, which pose a serious threat to human health. Acetylene gas, a by-product of calcium carbide, creates heat. It is mainly used as a fuel and in welding, and contains toxic impurities that affect the nervous system. When acetylene is filled amidst the fruit in a box, it heats the fruit on the outside, and thus the mangoes and oranges turn yellow or orange, as the case may be.

http://www.freshplaza.com/article/120072/India-Calcium-Carbide-still-used-to-ripen-fruits

"Though we had inspected fruit shops and godowns across the district, it's the first time we are seizing mangoes and calcium carbide together. It's a grave offence and the person can get a prison term of up to three years and a fine of up to Rs5 lakh for engaging in such a criminal activity," said a food safety official.

6th April 2014: Jiski maa insaan woh kaisa doodh pilaye? Today it’s more than likely that your glassful of doodh, or milk, contains everything from contaminated water, urea and milk powder to detergent, bleaching agents and the (banned) hormone oxytocin.

All the entrepreneurs emphasize their humane dairy farming practices—free-range cows “pampered” with tailor-made feed free of any pesticides, on-call nutritionists and veterinarians, mechanized milking, no hormones or antibiotics, and the fact that the milk is absolutely untouched till it reaches the customer’s doorstep.

All these brands are, of course, available at a premium. Insaan hona bhi to premium hai sadak ke kutte, suar aur jungle ke sher, hathi se. I wish an increasing number of people would be able to get pure milk.

8th March 2014: How do Indian women feel being an Indian on International Women's Day? What do you do for yourself and for your future to feel great as Indian? Perhaps it also depends on what you've learned from previous generations. How would you make the future generations?

Please share with people about our issues to make them aware so that they would reduce doing things that harm us. Think of how pigs and tigers goes after their food and then think of how humans should go after their food.

The Delhi High Court today termed as "alarming" the findings of an expert committee on the status of pesticide residues in food commodities and said almost entire 1.75 crore Delhiites eat fruits and vegetables which are not fit for human consumption.

The NGO Consumer Voice, one of the petitioners in the court, said the quantum of pesticides in fruits and vegetables in India, especially those sold in Delhi markets, was as much as 750 times the European standards.

The NGO claimed that of the five internationally banned pesticides, four were found to be common in vegetables sold here.

The move had come after some NGOs submitted survey reports that vegetables and fruits sold in the city's markets contain poisons capable of causing cancer and harming the nervous system and liver.

4th March 2014: “We may be eating dangerous dye, sawdust, soap, stone, industrial starch or aluminium foil along with food,” said Assistant Professor of Chemistry Leena Singh, who has done research in adulteration. Adulteration is easy money for traders and slow poisoning, disease or death for consumers. What we eat can be unsafe, unhygienic or harmful when nutritious elements in them are killed. “An easy example of food adulteration is vanaspati in desi ghee.” Adulterants when used in illicit drugs are called cutting agents, deliberate addition of toxic adulterants to food or other products for human consumption is known as poisoning. These adulterants are often highly carcinogenic and when consumed over a continuous period of time can stunt growth and cause serious ailments.

Indian sadak ki kutiya, suarni ya aur koi janwar to bahut kuch khila rahi hogi apne ko aur apne bachchon ko. Usme se insaan ka pheka hua khana bhi hoga. If humans would make their food great then street animals could also get better food. And then, there shouldn't be animals on the street where there's no natural place for the animals. I'm going to buy ON 100% Whey Gold Standard protein supplement. It's expensive but required.)

27th February 2014: While silver and gold are inert metals that do not harm the body’s composition, adulterants like aluminium, nickel and copper cause serious side affects to one’s health, including skin diseases, breathing problems and irregularities in the heart. While most of the established shops use pure varks, smaller nondescript shops tend to market adulterated vark.

Chandi (silver) vark was initially introduced in Hyderabad for its medicinal purposes in Unani and Ayurveda. It was later picked up as a decorative garnish by confectionary makers.

Suarni bhi Indian banaye, Sherni bhi Indian banaye aur Insaan bhi Indian banaye. Kya aap vark khaate aur khilate hai bina check kiye ki theek hai ki nahi. Thank You Germany for your technological solution.

So how does one tell a good vark from an adulterated one, considering that both silver and aluminium tend to look the same when drawn into sheets?:

16th January 2014: I had found an organic milk shop nearby. However, someone who owns cows nearby told mom that the organic shop takes milk from them. I don't know what that organic milk shop does what this milk. However, mom stopped getting milk from that organic shop.

I've heard similar about other organic shops also that they aren't as organic as they claim to be. If you're buying organic then try to check if it's really organic.

2nd January 2014: Ginger coloring inside - Is this due to harmful chemicals like acid wash? I bought this yesterday, 1st Jan 2014, evening from street vendor. I'm not an Indian street pig or any other animal but human and hence I share to ask and also make others aware about whether they check what they buy and also how can be their food when they eat outside. Do you wonder how our previous generations in general have been that we've such issues now. Is it possible to very easily complain about this to authority and that immediate action is taken due to public health at possibly high risk. What are you doing to make things better? I wish us best!

Indian sadak ke suar jaisa nahin baniye. Jab boards lagte the ki dogs and Indians not allowed then parents kya kehte the children ko ki aaj aise issues hain. Indian ki maa in general bachche ko sadak ka suar jaisa banane mein ya jungle ka sher jaisa banane mein ya duniya ka insaan jaisa banane mein best hai? Mother India ko help kariye. Aisi problem ko end kariye. Please sabko aware kariye ki woh great society and environment build and grow karen. Please help.

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-11-08/bangalore/43821094_1_pesticides-kitchen-gardening-cypermethrin

We are literally consuming poisons. Let’s have a brief look:

Brinjal: Chemical found is Heptachlor, 860% above the legal limit
Cabbage: Chemical found is Cypermethrin, 95.5% above the legal limit
Okra: Chemical found is Heptachlor, 55% above the legal limit
Rice: Chemical found is Chlorfenvinfos, 1324% above the legal limit
Banana: Chemical found is Chlorodane, 54% above the legal limit
Cauliflower: Chemical found is Aldrin, 320% above the legal limit
Apple: Chemical found is Dichlorvas, 140% above the legal limit

In a study conducted by the Kerala Agricultural University, “dangerous levels” of pesticide residues have been found in many main vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, small red onions, curry leaves, green chillies, etc. About three years ago, Profenofos, which is a second-level pesticide, was banned in India, except for tea and cotton. But its residues have been found in vegetables like gooseberries, green chilli, okra, curry leaves, mint leaves and coriander leaves.

Consuming pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables for a long period of time can prove fatal. Health experts say that pesticides are neurotoxins, affecting the nervous system and other important organs such as liver and kidney. Food poisoning and different sorts of allergies are common from these pesticides. Some pesticides even lead to cancer. Certain pesticides cause skin problems, loss of weight, sleeplessness and irritability.

The skyrocketing price of fruits and vegetables is not the only issue; so is the amount of pesticide residues these contain. It is surprising to know that most of the vegetables and fruits have an alarming percentage of harmful chemicals, which is far above the permissible limit prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

16th December 2013: I wrote to a client from Europe doing work in India: I wish you're making great sales in India! I read that food not allowed for export to Europe gets sold in India and so please take care with your food and also share with your clients since you mentioned about how people in India get attracted a lot to white people and so I wish they would care a lot about what you would say!

Please motivate your clients in terms of how pigs and tigers go after their food and that we're humans and so can do so much better in health and fitness. You would've heard about price rise of food items a major issue. Please help people to realize that less or more of pig like food is less or more of pig only. We've to make food quality a major issue for our health and fitness. Thank You for your great work!

5th October 2013: I just spoke to the company who sold the seemingly tampered protein box to me. I learned that my complaint call mid last week wasn't registered in their system and hence it seems a delay in their response. I told the rep the person's name who I spoke to. I told the rep that junior people might not care as much and so having direct online system for filing complaints should also be there.

The company rep told me that the customers can file complaints online after they log into the site. I said that I didn't know that and so I just called. I told the rep that there should be link nearby the contact numbers on their site that people can file their complaints online.

I also told the rep that they shouldn't use courier service to get the product back from me because what if it's the courier service that might be opening up the box. The rep said that it's highly unlikely. The person also said that it's highly unlikely that the box is tampered with because of their quality controls. I said that perhaps most people wouldn't check the supplement box like how I did it and so if there's potential mixing in the boxes then they wouldn't realize it. I also said that if this wouldn't have been returned then I would've taken the box to a lab for testing. The rep was very helpful. I'll be writing to major nutrition supplements brands that how people can test their products by themselves and that I would share online and which should also help those brands besides the many people consuming them thinking that it would help them.

I would visit their office next week with the box so that I get another box. Thank You! Best!

25th August 2013: "I buy only branded milk and we need to know whether it is safe. My two sons, aged seven and three, drink milk twice a day. If they skip a meal, milk also fills the gap. But now I am not sure whether giving them milk is a good idea. How will I fulfil their protein requirements?" said Aditi Sharma, a homemaker. http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-01-11/delhi/30615480_1_loose-milk-milk-powder-amul

What do you eat and what do you feed others? Are you maximizing your human potential? How do you feel as an Indian having such widespread milk adulteration considering the best in our world? Now people are getting aware about this better, however, what if you and your family consumed adulterated milk for years before? What are you doing for greatness? I do wish that the branded milk at most has non-harmful water mixed. I also wish the best for those selling loose milk. Best!

15th August 2013: Mother India, how was the quality of milk and the milk based products that you treated to all Indians today? I wonder what mothers think when they give birth knowing that they can't even feed themselves properly. What quality of humans would generally be born and grown like that? Best!

9th August 2013: God, Is this also why several people in India seem to keep trying to move abroad (ask anyone if they want to and generally they say yes that they want to just like a grandmother yesterday told me that her grandson would go since his grandfather does business in LA, USA)? God, Is this also why the people in India prefer to buy things not made in India if they can?

"As the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) laboratory report recently discovered our branded edible oils are full of unhealthy trans fats. 12 July 2013: Indian doodh wale, Suar jaisa na bana re. Doodh mein tu kya mila re? Tujhe agar koi roke na, Phir bhi ruk jaa re, Apne logon ke bare mein to soch ke.

I thought of this while thinking of milk adulteration issue in India. These days I've been drinking Yakult probiotic milk and I see people making tea using Nestle milk powder which seems nice. I do feel highly unfortunate about the severe milk adulteration issue. What do you do about milk adulteration? Best!

6th July 2013: Could this comment even discourage other people from maximizing their human potential? What's the future of India? Following comments continue from my previous post on 5th July:

PERSON Shakti Saran... Checked with the Poultry farm guy... The problem in India is more related to over use of antibitics... to keep the chickens from falling ill - not so for the chemicals you mentioned, though some remind me of my Botany classes and seems I am right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanthophyll. So, if the yellow colour is coming from Xanthophyll - we are actually getting essential nutrients from natural sources - Leaf to egg to humans. I wouldn't worry too much. Also, Americans do get frazzled by Dihydrogen Oxide... What can one say!

Shakti Saran PERSON, You said "more" and "not so for", however, it's unclear the absolute quantities present in general. Why are you making such light comments about such a serious issue or is the issue not that serious to you? If you've a good idea about their quantities used in general then please share because that'll really be of value if you can understand my point which I say because if you possibly did then you wouldn't only compare these two but also provide good idea about their quantities used in general meaning possibly how much of them are in an egg in general or else they could even be in very minute quantities or even in significant quantities having possibility of doing increasing harm to people over a long period of consumption.

Also, you talk about some botany class, however, is this chemical being fed for nutrition of hen or for primary purpose of making the yolk yellower because if it's the latter then what could be its harmful effects and also why make people think that their yolk is yellower than natural by using such chemical unless the yolk might not have been yellow enough otherwise and that the people might have then thought that perhaps the egg isn't that good?

Also, I mentioned about there being a variety of healthy options for eggs in USA and so I don't understand why you would mention about what you mentioned unless you don't have anything better to mention about how to improve things in India?

I feel highly unfortunate to type all this than getting much more valuable inputs for my post for the masses. It makes me wonder the quality and quantity of research and development in India. I typed because I wish that more and more people would realize better. Around an hour ago while on my way to my place, someone I met told me about people in general according to him that they say that "khahin to girna hai" (somewhere they have to fall). I wonder why people aren't using anti-pollution mask in Delhi region given the very high and severely harmful pollution. I wonder about several other such things and that then I meet such people who tell me such things.

5th July 2013:

Someone comments on my post in some group:

PERSON The yellowness of Indian eggs comes from the green leaves and carotenoids in them...
50 minutes ago · Like

Shakti Saran I thought my point was simple to understand since many people might be suffering from food adulteration and so perhaps also thinking about it. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough! I meant if chemicals are being used to make the yolk yellower. Somewhere I had read about a yellow dye created by feeding Xanthophyll, zeanthin, marigold dye and caroteinic acid. There could be any other combination of things also. Are they really there and if so then generally what all and that how much?

My post:

God, I've heard of stories of long ago of people in India being able to convert energy to matter. Why didn't you inspire them to make India great or did you or what happened and can you please help now?

Yesterday, my cousin visited who has cleared her medical exams in USA and now will be going there soon for a job. She mentioned about the variety of very healthy options for eggs being sold there.

What's the quality of egg of Indian in general? Please help us to have the best quality eggs in India also. I read somewhere that the yellow in egg sold in India might also be due to chemicals fed to chickens and if so then how harmful are those chemicals?

I request all to read about the highly valuable efforts of this human including for inspiration to make our world a much greater place. On this 4th of July, thank you very much for your efforts that I've technologies and solutions to share this with our world and I wish for humans to maximize their potential. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/04/technology/douglas-c-engelbart-inventor-of-the-computer-mouse-dies-at-88.html Best!

18 May 2013: Consumption of fruit ripened using carbide can cause diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, dizziness and even cancer in the long run. Bet on it. Your mango is ripened using carbide. [I suggest to test for it than not eating it at all. Anyone knows how?] In its biggest haul this year, AMC destroys 22,700 kg mangoes at Naroda wholesale fruit market. http://www.dnaindia.com/ahmedabad/1836343/report-bet-on-it-your-mango-is-ripened-using-carbide

From article published on June 13, 2011 about NON CALCIUM CARBIDE ripened mangoes

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Mango-lovers-can-gorge-on-safer-fruits-this-year/Article1-709074.aspx

Meanwhile, consumers are becoming more and more aware and hence, choosey about what they eat. Dr Vanit Kathuria, deputy manager (seeds and support services) at Mother Dairy’s Safal points out, “Apart from conventional factors such as price, quality and demand that affect the market, ‘safety’ has become an important factor in recent times.

Instead of calcium carbide, Safal authorities have been using ethylene, since setting up the Mangolpuri facility in 1988. Mature unripe mangoes are kept in temperature and humidity-controlled chambers, followed by a trigger of ethylene (at permissible limits) for 24 hours.

At the end of the third day, ripe mangoes are ready to be sent to retail outlets. “This is a kind of an accelerated process using ethylene. When fruits mature in a natural way, they release ethylene, which, in turn releases heat that helps in ripening. It takes six-seven days. But using the ethylene trigger, we get the same result in just three days,” said Subhash Sharma, Safal’s DGM (operations).

Safal has been advocating the ‘ripen mangoes at home’ concept. Unripe mature mangoes available at retail outlets are wrapped in a newspaper and placed in an airtight container for 4-6 days at home.

“The psychology of the consumer is such that they accept things easily if they are involved (in the process). Both children and elders are excited at the prospect of ripening mangoes at home,” Sharma added.

In this blog, I'll be sharing posts related to food adulteration in India. I'll be sharing issues and also on basic to advanced solutions for reducing and stopping it. I welcome you to comment with anything of value. I wish that all of us realize that by doing any amount of food adulteration, we're harming ourselves, our family and friends, and our society and world at large. We've to make the issue of food adulteration a critical issue in our lives since food is critical for our lives without which we can't even live and that if we're eating adulterated food then seriously how well are we living? Can we think of the Indian street dogs who eat just whatever that they get? We're humans who're capable in general and that we can at least get rid of the issue of food adulteration by all of us working together intelligently, smartly, and with common sense.

A person working at gym offered me Boondi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boondi as Prasad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prasad. Even though he had it in his hand, I took it from the polythene bag while telling him that I don't know if his hands are clean or not. Also, polythene bag has its own issues including when hot things are put in it like if the boondi is hot. I've written before on offering sweets as Prasad including that we don't know how proper are the ingredients and the cooking given widespread food adulteration in India which is much more unfortunate than widespread Indian street dogs and that we should try to reduce towards eventually stopping food adulteration, Indian street dogs who generally live very miserably and other issues. I'm now going to suggest the gym owner who I met today after a long while and whose company's web-site is being developed by me and my team that those interested in gym can contribute to buy quality chocolate like Cadbury to be offered to Lord Hanuman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanuman as Prasad on Tuesdays which is the day dedicated to Him. I'll share the same with others at gym as well since the owner called me his younger brother today which is great and that I wish that his quality gym wouldn't lead people to getting sick due any unfortunate issues in India and that his given work to me of making his web-site would be done well! Best! Shakti

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Neelakshi to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

Photo:

10824439890?profile=original

Before starting the interview, Neelakshi has this to share with all:

Nothing is more rewarding than to pursue a career that was always a passion for you. When that interest is dancing it makes sure that alongside work you are healthy and happy.
All work-out regimens are special but for me dancing is the most happy way to health and fitness. Holistic in its constitution, it gives you a pleasant mind and toned body.

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

Dancing had always been my passion. I'm literally one of those people who could dance before they walked but that didn't pull me into dance professionally.

I took up the profession four years back seeing the scope of the industry had begun to expand and I have the option of doing what I love the most.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

I'm a dance performer, choreographer and instructor for belly dance, salsa, bachata, zouk, hip-hop, Bollywood and a lot of my routines include acrobatics. I'm the co-director of iDance India, New Delhi and along with my partner - Jose Varghese, we run dance fitness programs which comprise of infusing all dance forms in the workout session channelized to burn calories and improve flexibility.

It's much catchy and consistent in terms of keeping the interest of people who want to work-out but can't seem to "enjoy" it when they go to gyms, jogging, aerobics. These workouts increase strength, balance and stamina while kicking up the energy levels of everyone.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

"Start small" and "To listen to your own body". The first step towards change is always the hardest. I always advise my students to just do a little bit on the first few days and ensure that I include more vivacious activities to keep it interesting. We don't want someone to workout hard for first week and then never see the work-out room for months.

As much as I want my students to push their limits to achieve their goals, I would ask them to stop or go further based only on if their body allows. Many people ignore this and end up injured leaving their goals incomplete.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

"Pushing students too much without evaluating their levels." As instructors with strength and flexibility, some teachers forget that the person coming to them hasn't moved a muscle in years before coming to the studio. Ignoring that they train them like they would train the rest who have been working out for months which only injures them further.

It's necessary to build up strength and flexibility slowly and gradually for long-lasting results. Whether it be the no. of sets, repetitions or complexity of exercises, first test the client to see where they stand in terms of agility and strength and then with basics, let them work their way up to a stronger body.

Many people have back problems, irrespective of regular gym sessions, why? Because some of the instructors don't prepare their student's backs before they give them weights to build muscles all over. Even for people working out for months or year, there are certain limitations to their body as every body is different and only when that's taken care of you can be sure of they're progressing in right direction.

It's a process and must be respected.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

At present, my company, iDance India runs regular batches in Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh and conducts performance and workshops all over India. In next five years, I see more and more people joining in to dance with us at our branches in all over India ensuring a healthier and happier lifestyle.

In this blog post, I share on carbohydrate and diet and nutrition for the health and fitness of people in India and worldwide including related to weight loss and gain. Information is from reputed sources and the references are at the end.

There are four major classes of biomolecules - carbohydrates, proteins, nucleotides, and lipids. Carbohydrates, or saccharides, are the most abundant of the four.

Carbohydrates have several roles in living organisms, including energy transportation, as well as being structural components of plants and arthropods.

Carbohydrate derivates are actively involved in fertilization, immune systems, the development of disease, blood clotting and development.

They are called carbohydrates because the carbon, oxygen and hydrogen they contain are generally in proportion to form water with the general formula Cn (H2O)n.

Most organic matter on earth is made up of carbohydrates because they are involved in so many aspects of life, including:

Energy stores, fuels, and metabolic intermediaries.

Ribose and deoxyribose sugars are part of the structural framework of RNA and DNA.

The cell walls of bacteria are mainly made up of polysaccharides (types of carbohydrate).

Cellulose (a type of carbohydrate) makes up most of plant cell walls.

Carbohydrates are linked to many proteins and lipids (fats), where they are vitally involved in cell interactions.

Carbohydrates and nutrition

People think of bread, pasta and rice when they think of carbs, but all these foods are rich in carbs too.

Bread, pasta, beans, potatoes, bran, rice and cereals are carbohydrate-rich foods. Most carbohydrate rich foods have a high starch content. Proteins and fats require more water for digestion than carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the most common source of energy for most organisms and animals, including humans.

Carbohydrates are not classed as essential nutrients for humans. We could get all our energy from fats and proteins if we had to. However, our brain requires carbohydrates, specifically glucose. Neurons cannot burn fat.

1 gram of carbohydrate contains approximately 4 kilocalories (kcal)
1 gram of protein contains approximately 4 kcal
1 gram of fat contains approximately 9 kcal

However, proteins are used in both forms of metabolism - anabolism (building and maintaining tissue and cells) and catabolism (breaking molecules down and releasing/producing energy). So, the consumption of protein cannot be calculated in the same way as fats or carbohydrates when measuring our body's energy needs.

Not all carbohydrates are used as fuel (energy). A lot of dietary fiber is made of polysaccharides that our bodies do not digest.

Most health authorities around the world say that humans should obtain 40 to 65% of their energy needs from carbohydrates - and only 10% from simple carbohydrates (glucose and simple sugars).

Should I go for a high-carb or low-carb nutritional approach?

Every couple of decades some 'breakthrough' appears which tells people either to 'avoid all fats', 'avoid carbs', 'you can't go wrong with carbohydrates', etc. Carbohydrates have been and will continue to be an essential part of any human dietary requirement for hundreds of years, unless a fundamental mutation occurs.

The obesity explosion in most industrialized countries, and many developing countries, is a result of several contributory factors. One could easily argue for or against higher or lower carbohydrate intake, and give compelling examples, and convince most people either way.

However, some factors have been present throughout the obesity explosion and should not be ignored:

Less physical activity.

Fewer hours sleep each night. A study published in the journal SLEEP4 identified an association with duration of sleep and obesity in both children and adults.

Higher consumption of junk food.

Higher consumption of food additives, coloring, taste enhancers, artificial emulsifiers, etc.

More abstract mental stress due to work, mortgages, and other modern lifestyle factors. A study by scientists from the US and Slovakia, revealed that neuropeptide Y (NPY), a molecule the body releases when stressed, can 'unlock' Y2 receptors in the body's fat cells, stimulating the cells to grow in size and number

In rapidly developing countries, such as China, India, Brazil, Mexico, obesity is rising as people's standards of living are changing. However, for their leaner nationals of a few decades ago carbohydrates made up a much higher proportion of their diets.

Those leaner people also consumed much less junk food, moved around more, tended to consume more natural foods, and slept more hours each night. Saying that a country's body weight problem is due to too much or too little of just one food component is too simplistic - it is a bit like saying that traffic problems in our cities are caused by badly synchronized traffic lights and nothing else.

It is true that many carbohydrates present in processed foods and drinks we consume tend to spike glucose and subsequently insulin production, and leave you hungry sooner than natural foods would.

The Mediterranean diet of the people in Greece or the island of Corfu, with an abundance of carbohydrates from natural sources plus a normal amount of animal/fish protein, have a much lower impact on insulin requirements and subsequent health problems, compared to any other widespread western diet.

Dramatically fluctuating insulin and blood glucose levels can have a long term effect on your eventual risk of developing obesity, diabetes type 2, heart disease, and other conditions. However, for good health we do require carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates that come from natural unprocessed foods, such as fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and some cereals also contain essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and key phytonutrients.

What happens to sugar levels in the blood?

When we eat food with carbohydrates in them our digestive system breaks some of them down into glucose. This glucose enters the blood, raising blood sugar (glucose) levels. When blood glucose levels rise, beta cells in the pancreas release insulin. Insulin is a hormone that makes our cells absorb blood sugar for energy or storage. As the cells absorb the blood sugar, blood sugar levels start to drop.

When blood sugar levels drop below a certain point alpha cells in the pancreas release glucagon. Glucagon is a hormone that makes the liver release glycogen - a sugar stored in the liver.

In short - insulin and glucagon help maintain regular levels of blood glucose for our cells, especially our brain cells. Insulin brings excess blood glucose levels down, while glucagon brings levels back up when they are too low.

If blood glucose levels are rising too rapidly and too often the cells can eventually become faulty and not respond properly to insulin's "absorb blood energy and store" instruction; over time they require a higher level of insulin to react - we call this insulin resistance.

Eventually, the beta cells in the pancreas wear out - because they have had to produce lots of insulin for many years - insulin production drops and eventually packs in altogether.

Insulin resistance leads to hypertension (high blood pressure), high blood fat levels (triglycerides), low levels of good cholesterol (HDL), weight gain and other diseases. All these illnesses, together with insulin resistance, is called metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome leads to type 2 diabetes.

If over the long-term blood sugar levels can be controlled without large quantities of insulin being released, the chances of developing metabolic syndrome are considerably lower.

Natural carbohydrates, such as those found in fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, etc., tend to enter the bloodstream more slowly compared to the carbohydrates found in processed foods. Good sleep and regular exercise also help regulate blood sugar and the hormone control.

Carbohydrates which quickly raise blood sugar are said to have a high glycemic index, while those that have a gentler effect on blood sugar levels have a lower glycemic index.

The glycemic index (GI)

Carbohydrates enter the bloodstream as glucose at different rates - high glycemic index (GI) carbohydrates enter the bloodstream as glucose rapidly, while low GI carbohydrates enter slowly because they take longer to digest and break down.

A meal with lower GI carbohydrates will raise your blood glucose levels more slowly, and over a longer period - this is better for long-term health and body weight control.

People who are relatively physically inactive (sedentary), and don't sleep at least 7 hours every night are especially vulnerable to the long-term detrimental effects of regular consumption of high GI carbohydrates.

Low GI carbohydrates have the following benefits:

You are less likely to put on weight

Low glycemic diets may be better for weight loss. A diet of foods less likely to spike blood sugar levels helps dieters lose more weight, according to a systematic review from Australia.

You will have better diabetes control

Your blood cholesterol levels will most likely remain healthy

Your risk of heart disease is lower

It will take longer for you to become hungry after a meal

Your physical endurance will improve

Reducing the risk of colon cancer recurrence - if you have colon cancer, there may be a lower chance of cancer recurrence. Colon cancer survivors whose diet is heavy in complex sugars and carbohydrate-rich foods are far more likely to have a recurrence of the disease than are patients who eat a better balance of foods, according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

How can I switch to a low GI lifestyle?

If you eat cereals for breakfast, switch to oats, barley or bran. Make sure the oats are as natural as possible; milling or grinding can ramp up their GI dramatically.

If you eat bread, only consume wholegrain bread.

Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you have a fruit juice make sure you eat all of the pulp (the meat of the fruit).

Eat rice with the husk still there (brown rice).

If you eat pasta go for whole grain ones.

Eat plenty of salads.

Cut out all junk foods, processed foods, foods with too many additives (flavorings, emulsifiers, etc).

How processing affects the Glycemic Index of carbohydrates?

Milling and grinding of foods always raise their glycemic index. Unfortunately, the processes often eliminate other nutrients, such as minerals, vitamins, dietary fibers as well, leaving what is often no more than starchy endosperm (the inner part of the seed/grain, mainly starch).

What is the difference between the Glycemic Load and Glycemic Index of a food?

The GI refers just to how quickly a food's broken down glucose enters the bloodstream. This may be misleading sometimes. For example, a melon has a high GI, however most of it is water. The glycemic load (GL) takes into account the GI of the carbohydrate as well as how much carbohydrate that food has.

GL = (GI x amount of carbohydrate) divided by 100.

For example:

An apple has a GI of 40 and contains 15 grams of carbohydrate. GL = (40 x 15) divided by 100 = 6g.

A small baked potato has a GI of 80 and contains 15g of carbohydrate. GL (80 x 15) divided by 100 = 12g.

The GL is a better measure for calculating the metabolic effect of foods - but it may not always lead to best nutrition.

What is the disadvantage of using just the glycemic load?

Dietitians, nutritionists and endocrinologists say that GL is useful for scientists, but GI may be better for lay people, especially those with diabetes. Many low GL foods do not have the right nutrients, such as butter or fatty meats which have the wrong types of fats for good long-term health.

Experts from the University of Sydney's (Home of the Glycemic Index) suggest that lay people should use GI as a tool that allows you to "choose one food over another in the same food group - the best bread to choose, etc." and not to get bogged down with the figures.

Slow carbs matter much more than low carbs. A well balanced diet consisting of good quality foods is as important as physical activity and good sleep.

Physical activity is a key factor in weight control and good long-term health. It is as important as a good diet and good sleep.

Sleeping at least 7 hours each night is as important as a well balanced diet and physical activity.

If you are overweight and you want to lose weight, focusing on slow carbs is useful. A well balanced and nutritional diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, plus good sleep and plenty of physical activity, is much more likely to lead to long-term success and good physical and mental health.
