"Incentive programs are not wellness programs," said Dr. Ronald Goetzel, Director of Emory University's Institute for Health and Productivity Research and President and CEO of The Health Project. "That can be a component, when done smartly, of a comprehensive program, but if that's all your program is going to be, you're going to fail miserably, and people are going to be resentful," he explained. According to Goetzel -- who has studied worksite wellness programs at large corporations such as Dow Chemical and Johnson & Johnson, and is being funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study best practices in the field -- incentive programs can help get people excited about health and keep them on track, but ultimately people's habits will only change if they are given the resources to change them and if the workplace norms and environments change.
Without the other pieces to facilitate behavior change -- healthy cafeterias, opportunities to exercise, flexible work hours, supportive leadership and middle managers, and health risk assessments and coaching -- incentive programs will only penalize, not change, those who are least healthy. Amazing! During the day I wrote to a very senior person that soon I'll have one week voucher of Fitness First CP for the person because he can possibly have very nice experiences there, however, I would be going to Gold's Gym nearby. Some hours later, I was deciding on which Physiotherapist to go to based on the information online and the one who I went to is very nice! He seemed to treat my shoulder very well. Moreover, he goes to Gold's Gym!!!
He mentioned that he has done several things early during his career already and that he seems very knowledgeable and also very good at his work. He has a nice clinic unlike the one I went to few days ago where the doctor's child was walking barefoot and which had made me concerned about hygiene there and so I had left.
He had BackJoy there and when I had asked about it, he had let me sit on it and had also explained to me about it. When I had said that it's nice and that now I don't want to sit on the chair without it, he had said that he doesn't want people to become an addict to it but to use it until they really fix their sitting posture and then they can also give it to others.
I shared with about the Health and Fitness India site http://www.healthfitnessindia.com and about marketing and content writing that I think that it's of value to share experiences which can help people learn. I've 9 more sessions with him around 11 AM daily. He mentioned that that's a convenient time for him and sure I would respect him like seems to do to his work and his clients. I, family and relatives have had negative experiences with doctors and so it's nice to have this physiotherapist. Best!
