workout (13)

Whether you are struggling to see the results you want at the gym, or are gearing up for a big round of training, keeping a workout journal is one of the most powerful ways out there to insure that you are getting the most of your efforts in the gym.

Here are just some of the ways that a workout journal will help you crush it at the gym this year:

1. Builds a layer of accountability.

For most of us, we work out alone. Without a coach, or a buddy, or any other kind of accountability to keep us honest it can be easy to slag off when it comes to our workouts. Missing a workout here and there, or skipping the occasional exercise that you don’t feel like doing, adds up.

Writing out your workouts, while it might not look like much, reinforces a sense of accountability to your workouts. I’ve lost count of how many times I plodded through a less-than-optimal training session simply because I had to write out the sets in my workout journal.

2. You do the things you set out to do.

Task completion—it’s something you probably haven’t thought about very often, but it is surprisingly important. When you lay out a list of things you are going to do, and then do them, this creates a sense of confidence while building a level of personal integrity. Keeping your word matters, whether it is doing the workout you set out to do or keeping your commitments at work and to your family, and the sense of accomplishment that comes from the task completion of completing your assigned workouts will benefit you across your life.

3. Keeps you focused on your weak spots.

For many of us we have something at the gym that desperately needs work. It could be getting that hip flexor mobility work in. Or doing more core strength work. Or simply squatting more. Whatever it is, a workout journal will help you assess these things, show you how much you are actually working on it, and help you create a plan moving forward so that you give that weak area the attention it needs and deserves.

4. It helps you track progress.

Burn-out is over-rated. What happens you are mentally not into your workouts isn’t burnout, and unless you are an elite athlete, it’s not over-training. It’s a lack of progress. Is there anything more demotivating than not seeing any gains or improvements in the gym. It ends up creating a bottomless void of purpose. Writing out your workouts, the results, and the sets and the reps, helps you target and plan for improvement. Improving in the gym is the ultimate motivator, and you can wield your workout journal to effect this.

5. Scheduling your workouts.

Sounds like a basic thing, but scheduling your workouts, the intensity of your workouts, as well as recovery and rest days will help you be more consistent and productive in the gym over the long term. Having the proper amount of time to recover between sessions is critical—your strength and size gains happen between your workouts, after all. In it’s most basic form a workout journal helps you monitor how often you are working out, how much you are recovering, and when to apply more or less rest.

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Sonia Bajaj to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

Photo: Ms. Sonia Bajaj, Fitness and Nutrition Coach, giving award at MISS North India 2013. Facebook photo link

10824440864?profile=original

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

After delivering 2 boys as any other woman tried to cut down on that extra fat on my body. Tried all kinds of yo yo diets, paid a good amount of money to the so called dieticians. Kept on going through the same circle of loosing few kilos on scale, and as soon as quitted the diet, went back to square one.

Finally planned to give up all diets, started exercising and eating a balanced diet, which could be followed life long. I saw such awesome changes in my body, not only in terms of fat loss, but also in terms of strength, stamina, agility, power.

I became a happier soul, more confident. So decided that if can share my experience with all those men and women who are struggling for years to lose fat in a right way, so that it never comes back, would be a great achievement for me.

Hence totally dedicated myself to promoting health and fitness.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

I've done my group certification with Reebok.

I've done my Personal Training certification with AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EXERCISE.

I'm certified in Pilates, Kickboxing, and Prenatal and Postnatal workouts.

I've done workshops in TRX AND BOSU workouts.

I'm a certified nutritionist by BFY MUMBAI.

People ask me WHERE ARE THE MACHINES IN YOUR GYM.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

I see a lot of excellent and certified fitness coaches here in India. But what I have realized is that what we need as per the times is Fitness motivators.

We have to train the brain before training any other muscle group. People give it up very fast, everyone is looking for a short cut.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

My piece of advice to my clients and every one reading this is that take care of your body.

Just give 30 minutes 5 days a week to yourself.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOURSELF, FAT LOSS WILL BE THE ICING ON THE CAKE.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

Few year from now I see people following what I try to enforce today;

FAT LOSS IS NOT A ONE DAY, ONE MONTH OR ONE YEAR PROJECT,

It's a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.

Ab Exercise for Strong Deadlifts

Notes From Readings

Abdominal exercises such as traditional crunches can help you flatten your stomach by tightening your muscles. However, they won't help you "spot burn" any fat that's covering up the muscles, and they won't get you the best results on their own. Combine a series of exercises to boost the effectiveness of your routine.

Also, the American Council on Exercise says traditional crunches activate less muscle activity than many other forms of abdominal exercises.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/384287-do-crunches-help-to-flatten-your-stomach/

Bicycle crunches specifically target the side abdominal muscles called the internal and external obliques. These muscles are commonly left out of most abdominal and core strengthening routines.

Bicycles are one of the most effective exercises to strengthen your tranvserse abdominis, rectus abdominis and obliques.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/540887-what-muscles-do-bicycle-crunches-work/

To better isolate your rectus abdominus and oblique muscles, complete the crunch movement with your feet up. Placing your feet up on a bench or exercise ball with your knees bent will limit the ability of the rectus femoris to become involved. You can also hold your legs directly up toward the ceiling.

According to a 2001 study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise, the vertical leg crunch is among the most effective abdominal exercises for developing your rectus abdominus and obliques.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/454471-the-muscles-targeted-by-crunches/

So for bodybuilders, eight-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger recommends crunches over situps in "The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding." However, many athletes who require not only abdominal strength but hip strength still perform situps. Find out exactly which muscles situps use to decide if it's the best exercise for you.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/545582-what-muscle-is-used-to-do-situps/

Situps and crunches are both common exercises performed to work the abdominal muscles. While these exercises are very similar, there are a few small differences that should be taken into account when deciding which exercise is best for your own personal fitness goals.

While situps are primarily considered a safe exercise, they may not be appropriate for everyone. The strong use of the hip flexors during situps can make them dangerous for individuals with weak abdominal muscles or a history of low back problems. If you find that situps create a pull or pain in your lower back, opt instead for crunches or half-situps in which your lower back never leaves the floor. These exercises will strengthen your abdominal muscles while protecting and maintaining spine health. Once your abs are stronger, you can begin to introduce complete situps into your workout routine.

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Ruth G to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

I entered the fitness industry because I always felt lethargic and dull and suffered from a lot of aches and pains as I was a very inactive person in my childhood. Due to which I was overweight, so when I started going to the Gym I felt very charged whenever I attended my aerobics class, leading to which I really lost a lot of weight. Here I realized I could be a part of the then new, growing fitness industry in 1996 and so here I am 16 years down the line, still actively involved in this Industry.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

I pride myself to be able to convince women not to treat their bodies badly by starving to lose weight. But I help them understand that to lose weight we have to feed our bodies with the right nutrients and hydrate regularly and I'm happy to say I've convinced most of my clients to eat regular, frequent meals.

My specialties as an instructor is I'm a certified Personal trainer and Aerobics Instructor and I have my current First Aid and CPR certification which empowers me to be be able to handle any unexpected situation while training clients. I specialize in PIYOLET classes which is a fusion of Pilates, Yoga and Ballet conditioning, Step aerobics, Kickboxing, Aerobics, Power yoga and Boot camp workouts were also my specialties until I got hooked on to Zumba fitness. Im also a Marketing Agent for Zumba in India. Soon I'm also going to restart taking PIYOLET classes in the near future.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

I feel you live this life only once so it's best to live a quality life by eating moderately, not necessary to restrict yourself. Workout regularly, and stop crash dieting!! If you can eat everything moderately and have a pretty stable lifestyle it won't be difficult to maintain a good body weight and live an illness and ailment free life. I promise you life is worth loving because when you have no illnesses to worry about you can enjoy a great life.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

Only one word, Overconfidence!!! Instructors treat everyone the same like some army boot camp, we have to realize that everyone has unique body structures, metabolism, stresses etc. We are in this industry to help people get healthy so its our responsibility to see to it that we equip ourselves well enough to offer injury free workouts which can take a client through the stages of fitness slowly but successfully so that progress is ensured.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

5 years down the line i see myself mentoring new Group fitness Instructors to become active, responsible Instructors. I also hope to see every citizen fit enough to actively play with their grandchildren even at a very old age.

10 yrs down the line I see myself opening an academy for serious fitness professionals in India.

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Drashti Pandit to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

Dance is My passion & Zumba made me more passionate which made me choose Fitness industry instead of job related to my Engineering Qualification. My day starts with Zumba & end with zumba that’s my inspiration to be fit & make people fit.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

Being a dancer since my 2nd std. Gradually, I got specialization in many things like western dancing, Classical dancing, Arangetram in Bharatanatyam but when I got in touch with Zumba I felt that yes… This is the thing which is meant for me.. It's fitness dance form which includes many dance styles with calorie burning.. My desire to get into Aquatic fitness takes me towards Professional Aqua Zumba Instructor.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

My piece of Advice to my client is always like Anything beyond the limit is not good.. either its your eating habit or your sleeping habit or your workaholic habit. Do everything in the limit. You will be fit you will feel great. To be fit is not to be Zero figure. To be fit is how is your stamina, how is your energy, how is your agility.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

Every person’s workout capacity is different, Body structure is different so many make mistakes like they treat all as same which is not good.. as a group X activity instructor.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

I am looking my self after 5 years with my lavishing studio where people come & be fit with fun. Support the new & aspiring instructor to carry forward their Fitness career.
