11th December 2013: "We get men above 35 years of age who want to be fitter, but the awareness level is very low. Studies show that Indians need to exercise seven times more in a week than their global counterparts to be at par with them. So, at present, brands are adapting themselves to different Indian sizes and shapes, rather than shoppers working on their bodies," says Vikram Bhatia, managing director of Fitness First gyms.

Kindly let me share a discussion that I've recently had with Mr. Toni Sharma who's an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Patna. We had the discussion on the F.OX group https://www.facebook.com/groups/fox.nift launched by the Students of NIFT Patna. Mr. Sharma has been very kind to mention on the group that "Shakti Saran .....by far you are the most valuable contributor to this group. Thanks a zillion for all the knowledge that you have shared with our members!!!"

Our discussion on it:

Toni Sharma edited a doc.

Students of NIFT Patna launched F.OX, the first ever online fashion quiz in October 2011. It is dedicated to all those students who are aspiring to pursue such careers which are intrinsically creative and artistic in nature. Those students who are aspiring to join NIFT/NID can interact with current NIFT/NID students and get useful inputs in terms of what areas to focus on and how to prepare for the exam and situation test. The F.OX community was launched on Facebook on 26th of September and it was formally inaugurated by Actress Neetu Chandra on 4th of October’11. Since then this group has already crossed a membership of 6600! The members are mostly NIFT and NID students/alumni. It also includes such individuals who are employed in fashion industry. F.OX is a community where people freely interact, discuss various aspects of fashion. Here, anyone and everyone can participate in the quiz to find out their true fashion quotient.
Come…….join us at www.facebook.com/groups/fox.nift !!!

Shakti Saran I look forward to connecting, sharing, and collaborating with people studying/working in fashion or entertainment. I've started www.healthfitnessindia.com also to pursue my interests in them. Best! Shakti Saran

Toni Sharma Shakti Saran .....by far you are the most valuable contributor to this group. Thanks a zillion for all the knowledge that you have shared with our members!!!

Shakti Saran Hi Toni Sharma, Thank You for your kind response! It's nice that earlier this evening, a gentleman who I highly respect wrote on my card that "Shakti is a vibrant spirit in the cosmos" along with his signature and that now I read your kind response. Last night, I saw someone asking Metro passengers about a Metro stop, however, it seemed to me that it wasn't clear to him what the people had responded to him because the people hadn't spoken clearly to him. So I told him about the stop and that he thanked me because he wasn't clear like I had thought. We spoke for a while after that and that he even thought that I knew him from before because of how I was talking to him. He works for a nice furniture company and that has worked on the chairs that have been used in Big Boss. He spoke to me on several things including about this business in general, about the opportunities that he has had, and other things. I look forward to staying in touch with him and that as I do business consulting related to the Health and Fitness India network, I would also try to get him work like to get furniture designed and made for gyms, fitness centers and others. I wish that I can keep contributing to this group and that perhaps also meet people with whom I can do even more. I'm interested in fashion and entertainment as I've mentioned above and that I would also pursue my interests in them through the Health and Fitness India network. If you like then you're welcome to it and that I wish that it would be of value to you in many ways. I would be sharing this discussion of ours as a blog post on the network. Best, Shakti Saran

I wrote this yesterday: I just got my nephew an infra-red gun having target as a turntable with lights and music. Using my iPhone, I've made some videos of him and a girl of six years visiting him. She said "yeh game achcha hai" (this game is nice) and "iss gun se kisi ke car ke tire ko shoot karna hai..." (have to shoot someone's car's tire with this gun). My iPhone is having issues and its battery even ran out once while making the video although the video got saved after I plugged it into my laptop and it turned on after charging for a short while. I've to figure out how to transfer the videos to my laptop so that I can upload it because even though it's connected to my laptop, I'm unable to browse it.

Today, November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. I knew that some people were going to visit my relatives (I'm visiting them) to meet a relative visiting from Canada, however, I didn't know that a six year old girl would also visit. She and my nephew are playing with it and it seems with a lot of interest. I've showed them a few things so that they can do it well enough.

I wish our men and women a safe and secure life. There are pigs and tigers and many other animals and then there are humans. What should be our fight as humans? Indian in general kaisa? Kya waisa jaisa hawaa, paani aur khaana in general uska? Aur yeh sab ki quality kiske jaisi? I wish us best!

This post shares about health and fitness benefits of elliptical cross-trainer exercise machines, brands available in India and how to buy them including what factors to consider. You'll see more and more relevant information added in this post.

If you manufacture elliptical workout machines then you can share your details with me by signing up and sending me a message about your products.

If you sell elliptical machines to gyms, fitness centers and homes then please ask about my marketing services.

1. Are elliptical machines better than treadmills for basic aerobic workouts?

Answer from Edward R. Laskowski, M.D.

You can get an effective aerobic workout with both an elliptical machine and a treadmill. In general, you can let your fitness goals determine whether you choose an elliptical machine or a treadmill — or a different piece of exercise equipment.

However, elliptical machines might offer some advantages over treadmills. For example:

2. Dual Action Workout

What makes an elliptical trainer unique is the combined upper and lower body workout. In fact, there is no other fitness equipment that simultaneously works as many muscle groups. That is why many refer to an elliptical as a cross-trainer.

With an elliptical trainer, you get a workout that utilizes the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, chest, back, triceps and biceps. The obvious benefit from exercising more muscles is that you tone more of your body. Furthermore, you also optimize your energy expenditure. You end up burning more calories and fat in less time. It is also suggested that there is a reduced perceived rate of exertion with an elliptical workout. You are actually exercising harder then you would normally perceive.

Of course, to get the full benefit of the dual action workout, it is important that you distribute the resistance between your upper and lower body. Many people who exercise on an elliptical trainer place most of the resistance on their lower body and only go through the motions with the upper handlebars.

3. How to find an exercise machine that suits you, and make the most out of any machine workout.

Elliptical Machines pack a little less punch on the joints, and either can be a good alternative to the treadmill, says Matthew Vukovich, exercise physiologist and associate professor at South Dakota State University.

Because you use them in a standing position, you're using lots of muscle mass, so the calorie burn rate is still pretty high.

Elliptical machines with arm components can further increase the numbers of calories you burn, says Stamford. But if you're a beginner, he doesn’t recommend using your arms at first.

4. How to Buy an elliptical exercise machine?

The variety of elliptical trainers is a very important point. Because there are so many ways an elliptical can be made, there are a lot of competing choices and marketing claims. Many of these claims are complete fabrications just to get you to buy their machines so you need to be very careful.

Read http://walking.about.com/od/treadmilling/a/elliptical.htm for responses to the following questions:

A. How Much to Spend for an Elliptical Trainer

A. 1. What is Your Budget?

A. 2. Have You Used an Elliptical Trainer?

A. 3. How Experienced are You with an Elliptical Trainer?

A. 4. Determine Which Features You Want

B. Decide Who, Where, and How You Will Use the Elliptical Trainer

B. 1. Who will be using the elliptical trainer?

B. 2. Where will you use the elliptical trainer?

B. 3. How will you use the elliptical trainer?

C. DETERMINING QUALITY LEVELS

This is the most difficult part of buying an elliptical trainer. There are some great marketing people in the fitness business. Their goal is to make you think that their elliptical trainer is worth much more than someone else’s elliptical trainer, regardless of price.

Although it is difficult to absolutely determine quality from the price of the product, it is still the best way to separate the quality levels of ellipticals. It makes sense as well. A manufacturer has to spend more money on a better quality elliptical trainer. Therefore, they have to charge more for it as well.

D. Determining Elliptical User Variables

D. 1. User Weight

D. 2. Time Used

D. 3. Number of Users

The strength of any elliptical trainer or its Achilles' heel is its drive system. By drive system, we are speaking of the drive axle, axle bearings, drive belt, generator or alternator, and power PCB. If these are well-engineered it will hide a multitude of sins. Components are important but engineering is more important in this area. For instance, one manufacturer uses cheaper quality components but gets away with it (sometimes) because their engineering is so good. We have also seen others who have fantastic components but poor reliability due to poor engineering.

DIFFERENT ELLIPTICAL TYPES AND SMOOTHNESS

Frankly, the difference in elliptical trainer smoothness has three main considerations: Design type, quality of build, and weight of the flywheel. To decide which type of elliptical will feel smoother to you – you will have to try the different models. When doing this make sure that you try them in the same price range. Otherwise you will get a skewed view of the type. The smoothness will depend a lot on your physiology.

The quality of construction will make a difference in smoothness. You will easily be able to tell the difference in the same type of machines. Make sure that you decide on which type of elliptical design you want before you attempt to determine the quality of construction. Otherwise the differences in type smoothness will skew the results. The flywheel weight will determine to a great extent the smoothness of the machine. The heavier the flywheel the more inertia is available to keep the drive system turning. The only drawback to the heavy flywheel is that the drive axle bearings will wear more quickly.

DRIVE SYSTEM COMPONENTS

The different drive system components that make up the elliptical drive system are the drive axle, axle bearings, drive belt, generator or alternator, and power PCB. Unfortunately you will not be able to determine the quality level of these components by looking at the machine.

Some questions that you can ask the sales person will help you get some general notions of the machine.

Sealed bearings are generally better in these units than shielded bearings. This is because the sealed bearings are better at keeping dirt out of the ball track.

Alternator or generator powered units will typically have more expensive repairs than plug in machines.

NOISE

An overly noisy elliptical trainer points to poor engineering, poor components, or poor assembly.

PROGRAMS

These provide variation in your workout.

HEART RATE CONTROL (HRC)

The best option in this category is HR handgrips you can hold onto that determine your heart rate. The manufacturers have made this system much more accurate than it was in the past but they are still quite inaccurate on the low cost machines.

WARRANTY & MAINTENANCE

Warranties lately have become crazy so don’t get carried away with the Lifetime warranties on this or that elliptical trainer. Ultimately, you want to make sure you get an elliptical that you like, is easy for you to operate, and feels good for use. If you don’t like it, you won’t need the warranty anyway because you won’t use the machine enough to break it.

In regard to maintenance, keeping it clean is the golden rule. To help with this, put it on an elliptical mat and periodically clean the entire elliptical.

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Sonia Bajaj to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

After delivering 2 boys as any other woman tried to cut down on that extra fat on my body. Tried all kinds of yo yo diets, paid a good amount of money to the so called dieticians. Kept on going through the same circle of loosing few kilos on scale, and as soon as quitted the diet, went back to square one.

Finally planned to give up all diets, started exercising and eating a balanced diet, which could be followed life long. I saw such awesome changes in my body, not only in terms of fat loss, but also in terms of strength, stamina, agility, power.

I became a happier soul, more confident. So decided that if can share my experience with all those men and women who are struggling for years to lose fat in a right way, so that it never comes back, would be a great achievement for me.

Hence totally dedicated myself to promoting health and fitness.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

I've done my group certification with Reebok.

I've done my Personal Training certification with AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EXERCISE.

I'm certified in Pilates, Kickboxing, and Prenatal and Postnatal workouts.

I've done workshops in TRX AND BOSU workouts.

I'm a certified nutritionist by BFY MUMBAI.

People ask me WHERE ARE THE MACHINES IN YOUR GYM.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

I see a lot of excellent and certified fitness coaches here in India. But what I have realized is that what we need as per the times is Fitness motivators.

We have to train the brain before training any other muscle group. People give it up very fast, everyone is looking for a short cut.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

My piece of advice to my clients and every one reading this is that take care of your body.

Just give 30 minutes 5 days a week to yourself.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOURSELF, FAT LOSS WILL BE THE ICING ON THE CAKE.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

Few year from now I see people following what I try to enforce today;

FAT LOSS IS NOT A ONE DAY, ONE MONTH OR ONE YEAR PROJECT,

It's a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.

Hi All,

In this blog post, I'll share in the comments below about Physiotherapy Theory, Techniques and Tools.

You can also browse Physical Therapy India www.facebook.com/PhysicalTherapyIndia

Physical therapists formed their first professional association in 1921, called the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association. Led by President Mary McMillan, an executive committee of elected officers governed the Association, which included 274 charter members. By the end of the 1930s, the Association changed its name to the American Physiotherapy Association. Men were admitted, and membership grew to just under 1,000.

With the advent of World War II and a nationwide polio epidemic during the 1940s and 1950s, physical therapists were in greater demand than ever before. The Association's membership swelled to 8,000, and the number of physical therapy education programs across the US increased from 16 to 39.

By the late 1940s, the Association had changed its name to the American Physical Therapy Association, hired a full-time staff, and opened its first office in New York City.

Hi All,

I'd like to thank Ms. Neelakshi to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:

Photo:

10824439890?profile=original

Before starting the interview, Neelakshi has this to share with all:

Nothing is more rewarding than to pursue a career that was always a passion for you. When that interest is dancing it makes sure that alongside work you are healthy and happy.
All work-out regimens are special but for me dancing is the most happy way to health and fitness. Holistic in its constitution, it gives you a pleasant mind and toned body.

1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?

Dancing had always been my passion. I'm literally one of those people who could dance before they walked but that didn't pull me into dance professionally.

I took up the profession four years back seeing the scope of the industry had begun to expand and I have the option of doing what I love the most.

2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?

I'm a dance performer, choreographer and instructor for belly dance, salsa, bachata, zouk, hip-hop, Bollywood and a lot of my routines include acrobatics. I'm the co-director of iDance India, New Delhi and along with my partner - Jose Varghese, we run dance fitness programs which comprise of infusing all dance forms in the workout session channelized to burn calories and improve flexibility.

It's much catchy and consistent in terms of keeping the interest of people who want to work-out but can't seem to "enjoy" it when they go to gyms, jogging, aerobics. These workouts increase strength, balance and stamina while kicking up the energy levels of everyone.

3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?

"Start small" and "To listen to your own body". The first step towards change is always the hardest. I always advise my students to just do a little bit on the first few days and ensure that I include more vivacious activities to keep it interesting. We don't want someone to workout hard for first week and then never see the work-out room for months.

As much as I want my students to push their limits to achieve their goals, I would ask them to stop or go further based only on if their body allows. Many people ignore this and end up injured leaving their goals incomplete.

4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?

"Pushing students too much without evaluating their levels." As instructors with strength and flexibility, some teachers forget that the person coming to them hasn't moved a muscle in years before coming to the studio. Ignoring that they train them like they would train the rest who have been working out for months which only injures them further.

It's necessary to build up strength and flexibility slowly and gradually for long-lasting results. Whether it be the no. of sets, repetitions or complexity of exercises, first test the client to see where they stand in terms of agility and strength and then with basics, let them work their way up to a stronger body.

Many people have back problems, irrespective of regular gym sessions, why? Because some of the instructors don't prepare their student's backs before they give them weights to build muscles all over. Even for people working out for months or year, there are certain limitations to their body as every body is different and only when that's taken care of you can be sure of they're progressing in right direction.

It's a process and must be respected.

5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?

At present, my company, iDance India runs regular batches in Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh and conducts performance and workshops all over India. In next five years, I see more and more people joining in to dance with us at our branches in all over India ensuring a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Hair Loss Treatment  in women though do not produce complete baldness but create negative impact, many studies reported stigmatization, lower self confidence in women having visibility of scalp with severe hair loss. Unlike in male baldness where physician can easily take decision about hair restoration surgery, in female making decision about hair restoration is not an easy task. Proper evaluation of hair loss with Dermatologist, Trichologist and regular treatment for at least one year is required prior to planning Hair restoration surgery.

10824437463?profile=original

Many medical problems in female eg. Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia areata, Active cicatrecial alopecia and Trichotelomania respond well to medical treatment. The best candidates for Hair restoration in female are patients with diffuse central thinning of the scalp with retention of the frontal fringe of the hair line. Cicatrecial alopecia patient with stabilization of disease process are also good candidates. However in our practice we prefer to do test patch before planning for larger session of FUE hair restoration in cicatrecial alopecia patient. Procedure of FUE hair restoration surgery in women is similar to male. However higher possibility of telogen effluvium which may occur several weeks to month after procedure should be explained to patient and family members.

Risk of permanent loss of existing hair because of shock should also be explained. We have adopted certain guidelines to minimize the possibility of Telogen effluvium.

  • Use of Hypodermic needles rather than using Blades
  • Avoid dense packing
  • Short session (500 to 600 grafts) preferred
  • Minimum use of Tumescence.

Can we in our communities contribute to have dog trainers train the Indian street dogs to bark a lot at the vehicles polluting heavily (above a limit)? Would that help to make the drivers realize that they're not only harming others but also themselves? Can we share this with dog trainers and that try to do this if any dog trainers are professionally interested? It's highly unfortunate that Indian street dogs are living in such pathetic conditions and that they can't even do anything like humans for the same. Best! Shakti

From http://www.jagranjosh.com/current-affairs/indoswiss-bilateral-meeting-concluded-at-geneva-on-sidelines-of-world-health-assembly-1369117412-1

A bilateral meeting between Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, India, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Minister of Health Switzerland, Alain Berset, was concluded on 20 May 2013 at Geneva. The meeting was held on the sidelines of World Health Assembly at Geneva. The aim of the meeting was to give further impetus to cooperation in the field of healthcare.

In the meeting, it was decided that an MoU between the two countries will be inked soon for broadening the scope of bilateral ties. The major areas of cooperation of that MoU will be:

• Non-Communicable Diseases including controlling the associated risk factors of tobacco use, harmful alcohol use, unhealthy diet, etc.

• Communicable Diseases and Anti- Microbial resistance
• Universal Health Coverage
• Maternal & Child health
• Sexual & Reproductive Health
• Health & Medical Research
• Therapeutic Products
• Electronic Medical Records
• Global Health Governance

In the meeting, it was exuded that Switzerland will extend full support to India on global platforms in order to carry forward the pursuits of providing high quality generic medicines at affordable prices.

From http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ani/indo-swiss-bilateral-meet-held-at-geneva-113052100284_1.html

Speaking on the occasion, Azad said that friendship between India and Switzerland goes as back as Independence of India, strongly rooted as it is in shared values of multi-culturalism, democracy and rule of law.

Recalling the historic ties between the two countries, Azad said that a treaty of friendship between India and Switzerland was signed at New Delhi as early as 1948, soon after India's independence.

Emphasizing the special nature of relationship between the two countries, Azad said that many high level visits have been exchanged in the recent past and that many bilateral institutional arrangements like Indo-Swiss Joint Commission, Swiss- India Chamber of Commerce, Indo-Swiss Joint Committee on Science and technology, etc. exist to further cement our strong relations.

Azad noted that in the continuum of strong Indo-Swiss bilateral cooperation, an MOU between the two countries will be inked soon to further broaden the scope of bilateral ties.

"Considerable progress has been made in this regard and an MOU in the field of health is being signed to promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries", Azad said.
